SERENE CHATS: This drink brings the family together. We make it on family movie nights, or on any evening when we are all just hanging together. It helps my little ones settle down, and it seems to make our family experience somehow cozier and cuddlier. Cuddle Family Hot Chocolate is found in the “Hot Drinks” section of the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook, page 435. This recipe is a family-serve recipe that makes 6 to 8 generous cups.

SERENE CHATS: This drink brings the family together. We make it on family movie nights, or on any evening when we are all just hanging together. It helps my little ones settle down, and it seems to make our family experience somehow cozier and cuddlier. Instructions

  1. Place 4 cups of the hot water in a blender. Add all the remaining ingredients except the okra (if using) and blend until very smooth.
  2. Pour the puree into a saucepan. Add the remaining 4 cups hot water to the blender, add the okra (if using), and blend until completely broken down and creamified.
  3. Pour into the saucepan and whisk briskly while heating the mixture over medium heat. Taste and adjust to “own it.”

"This recipe is completely milk free, even free of milk substitutes, which is great for us purists, because if we have a raw milk source, then why heat that and destroy its rawness, right?  This hot chocolate has key ingredients, like glycine-rich gelatin that acts as a soothing dietary lullaby to settle down wired little (or adult) bodies and ready them for sleep.  The tiny bit of healthy fat and tummy settling and satiating okra will help quiet nighttime, post-dinner hunger.  Cocoa may be thought of as stimulating, but this high-antioxidant ingredient is also rich in magnesium, which calms the nervous system; when tempered with healthy fat and the smooth viscosity of okra, its effect is not awakening but relaxing. Remember, if you choose to use
the okra, keep the secret to yourself if you think it will dampen your children’s acceptance of this yummy drink.  We promise if they don’t know it’s in there, they will never taste it!  This is a great way for veggie-hating children to get a daily or (nightly) health dose.

Mix up the batch in the evening, keep it on a warming element, and then ladle out the hot chocolate throughout the evening to your eager sippers."

NOTE: You can make an S-version of this drink by adding more butter or coconut oil or ghee, if desired.
