Basic Treat Squares
Description
Treat squares/balls are great little "pick me ups". As long as you know you have some treat squares in the fridge or freezer, you don't have to worry about caving in and eating that leftover piece of Domino's pizza friends brought over! Basic Treat Squares are on pages 400-401 of the original Trim Healthy Mama book.
Ingredients
Instructions
- Throw a few handfuls of raw nuts, seeds, and dried or fresh coconut into food processor.
- Add 2 or more scoops of protein powders, green food powders, or superfood powders such as maca or hemp.
- Add 1/2 cup golden flax meal or chia.
-
Add TH Super Sweet Blend or TH Pure Stevia Extract Powder (to taste) and desired flavorings (such as cocoa powder or melted squares of unsweetened chocolate). You may like to add vanilla, mint, lemon, or almond extracts, but not all at once, of course!
-
Add a few heaping Tbs raw coconut oil, and/or coconut concentrate, and/or favorite nut butter of choice.
- Process in food processor until combined. Taste and add more sweetener or flavors of needed.
- If not moist enough to hold together, add more coconut oil, coconut concentrate, or nut butters. We have also used a little coconut milk at times to aid in moisture content.
- Transfer to a flexible plastic lid or flexible plastic cutting board and form into 1-inch high loaf. Score into squares. Place in freezer for 10 minutes.
- Remove and cut squares fully. Place in baggies and store in fridge.
Note
We often make large batches and store half in the fridge and half in the freezer. When the fridge treats are eaten up, we place the frozen ounces in the fridge. I hope you noticed that we did not rely on dried fruits like dates, raisins, or sticky sweeteners such as honey, maple, or agave syrup to hold our recipe together. This is too fattening when combined with all the healthy fats and nuts. However, you could use a few goji berries, or unsweetened cranberries, to add bursts of chewy sweet tartness. Each times we make these treats, they come out differently as we have different ingredients on hand. Sometimes they can be as simple as ground almond, coconut oil, cocoa, and flavorings. Or, they can be as elaborate as a paragraph of ingredients. Use your own creativity. The combinations are endless.
