Recipe Notes

Intro continued...The Secret Big Boys are new takes on the Big Boy Smoothie. They are large and satisfying protein drinks that soothe digestion, moisturize your insides, and help shed stubborn pounds. The “secret” comes from the fact that you would never guess all that creamy goodness contains a full cup of okra—unless somebody spills the beans. Don’t spill the beans! Even your children will enjoy this unless they find out about the okra—and then, and only then, will they turn up their noses. Hide the okra bag, Mamas!

More Concerning the Sensitive Secret Big Boy - page 417 of the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook...

"This smoothie has all the tummy-soothing and healing power of okra, just like the other Secret styles but it has the addition of gelatin, which moisturizers and protects the mucosal lining of your intestinal tract and brings healing to an irritated bowel.  The gelatin and collagen in this drink will supply your protein needs, so you can leave out the whey and still get a protein boost.  You will also get a nutritional punch from the greens, but not the greens that are too high in roughage to digest easily.  We have purposefully kept this drink gentle on fiber and sweeteners. No sugar alcohols are used, and there is plenty of fiber in here, but mostly the soft, soothing type from okra.

The cardamom is not only delicious (especially when paired with vanilla), but was specifically chosen for its ability to soothe a cranky digestive system.  This aromatic medicinal spice helps combat nausea, constipation, or the other extreme, diarrhea, as well as acidity, heartburn, bloating, and a bad case of what we call “fluffs,” which is a bunch of tooting.  Another great perk is it is an effective breath freshener.  Ever get a bad case of the hiccups?  Cardamom is an antispasmodic—the perfect natural answer.  Other involuntary muscle spasms, like stomach and intestinal cramps, are relaxed by cardamom, too.  This talented spice makes the smoothie taste like you need to sit cross-legged in an exotic Bedouin tent as you sip.  It is also a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent major disease dragons like cancer.

Go ahead—now even with a tender tummy, you can eat like a Big Ol' Boy!"

CONCERNING SHAKES, SMOOTHIES, FRAPPAS, AND THIN THICKS, page 407 of the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook:
"Sweet, creamy drinks are a big part of a Trim Healthy Mama’s life.  We’ve got you well covered here, with lots of different flavors and varieties, so there’s no chance of your getting bored.  Instead of piling on the pounds, these thick and creamy drinks will help strip the weight off of you—woo hoo!  Unless otherwise noted, they can be used as a breakfast, a snack, or even as a quick lunch for on-the-go days.  If you are a Mama on a very tight budget and cannot afford the whey protein or any of the other special ingredients, try 1% cottage cheese or plain 0% Greek yogurt in your creamy drinks.  Those two options cream the drinks up nicely and offer protein, which is a must for all our shakes, smoothies, and frappas.  You can always add a tablespoon or two of heavy cream for more S-style indulgence.  And please don’t fret about the collagen, gelatin, or lecithin, either.  In most of the recipes (Thin Thicks excluded) they are optional, and if you can’t afford them, you’re still fine.  Remember, you will do THM your own way, and for some that means limiting the use of special ingredients."

_______________

Special Note for our Turtles and Allergen-free Mamas:
Those with elevated prolactin levels can omit the whey protein and use 1 to 2 scoops Integral Collagen instead. (Read the “Heads Up: Turtle Losers!” chapter in Trim Healthy Mama Plan for more about why elevated prolactin levels and whey protein are sometimes not compatible.) Allergen-free Mamas who cannot even tolerate whey protein (it is lactose free, so many do fine with it) can stick to the collagen and leave out any cottage cheese.
