You can read about my husband’s gut healing story thanks to this smoothie on page 184 of Trim Healthy Wisdom. My husband is not a volume-loving guy, so I don’t make this smoothie huge for him, but I do pack it with gut healers. It is small but mighty. Over the last couple of years or so, this has become Charlie’s breakfast every single morning unless we leave home and go on vacation. He doesn’t like to miss one day of it as his digestion is not as good without it. If you would like to make this smoothie for yourself or another family member and prefer a bigger smoothie, you can up the berry amount from just the 4 frozen strawberries (or just a small handful of blueberries) to a full cup. You can also up the kefir from 1 cup to 1 ½ cups.
As I mentioned in the Wisdom book, I make Charlie’s smoothie with full-fat milk kefir as he needs the extra calories. His smoothie becomes a Crossover because of the half of a frozen banana, and I also add some honey. The sweetness of both honey and stevia is something he likes. If you use lean milk for your kefir (which I suggest you do if you have lost CLBM), your smoothie will be a true E.,
This recipe is forgiving and works with any form of added protein powder you might have, although I typically just use 3 Tbs TH Optimized Plant Protein Powder when making it for my husband in the morning. Be sure to drink lots of water when using this smoothie. The psyllium in it will be very beneficial to your bowel movements, but you need plenty of water for it to do its thing. You can read about the amazing benefits of psyllium husks for your gut and your healthiest weight on pages 178 and 179 of Trim Healthy Wisdom.
Check out the pudding version of this smoothie called Charlie’s Kefir Pudding. It is great for an afternoon snack.

Protein Nerd Notes
Kefir has just 8-10 grams of protein per cup and less than 1 gram of leucine, so it is not enough protein as a stand-alone. Including the optimized protein powders here will more than well cover your Protein Nerd Level 3 requirements.
