FAQ

If you’re new to THM, you probably have questions.  Get answers from our team and fellow mamas here.

Is Trim Healthy Mama family-friendly?

Question: Is this really something that I could transition our family to, including a reluctant husband? And is it really a sustainable way of doing things? Never again having cinnamon rolls or coffeecake or “regular” pizza could be problematic, at least for the other members of my family.

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

Absolutely! Family friendly recipes are what this plan is geared around. Chili, Meatloaf and Pizza recipes are easily made on plan. Many of these Trim Healthy Mama tweaked recipes are hits with every member of the family. If a certain family member doesn’t enjoy the Trim Healthy Mama twist on a family favorite, you don’t need to force the issue, Often family members “come around” to Trim Healthy Mama style after time passes and your results and joy over your food start speaking for themselves.

More Mamas Answer:

Tasha shares, “In order to keep my family on board I took our favorite recipes and just made them THM friendly.”

Kari shares, “In my experience of being the only one in my family doing THM, most of the time it’s easy. If I make a THM desert, they all love it. If they want a traditional pizza crust or whatever, then I make it for them. I don’t eat it. I don’t get tempted on this diet, EVER. I only make separate meals maybe once or twice a month. I have modified my own recipes and everyone has loved what I’ve made, including how I’ve made grain free versions of things. My family is picky, but they just don’t have a problem with this diet. I make THM-friendly meals every night. Easy peasy.”

Brandy shares, “I just told my husband yesterday how excited I was that I was going into week 3… because I usually quit any diet at day 8! It is the easiest program I’ve ever attempted. I can already tell a huge difference! I have completed 3 weeks without the special ingredients! I eat out… I cook for my family and they all love it! I am still learning, but I am super pleased with the plan, the simplicity, and how I feel! I finally do not feel deprived when attempting to lose!”

Is the Trim Healthy Mama plan easy to do?

Question: So I need honest opinions… how difficult is it to follow what the authors suggest?

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

There is a learning curve to Trim Healthy Mama. It is not designed like most conventional diets as a 30 or 90 day plan. You are not instructed what to eat at every meal with portion sizes dictated to you. The plan encourages you to learn to put meals together that will suit your own needs, challenges and food preferences. Since Trim Healthy Mama is geared as a lifelong plan, you learn as you go, but after a while it becomes second nature for most people.

More Mamas Answer:

Angie shares: “Once you learn the guidelines of the book and live it for a while, it gets easier and easier. The hardest part is learning everything because it can seem overwhelming but if you stick to it, you are going to fall in love with it!”

Kaiya shares: “Be prepared for a few weeks of learning the ropes, but it really is so easy after that. I also like that you do not have to count calories or grams or weigh your food or go crazy with that.  This is NOT a crash diet, but a way to make sustainable, life-long changes in the way you eat and think about food.”

Is Trim Healthy Mama for cooks only?

Question: I don’t really love to cook. Can I still do the Trim Healthy Mama plan even if I don’t like spending lots of time in the kitchen?

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

Yes! Trim Healthy Mama is for all types, both people who love to cook from scratch and those who feel inept in the kitchen.  There are lots of speedy, easy recipes that take only few minutes to put together.

More Mamas Answer:

Mary S. shares, “I really don’t like to cook yet since finding THM cooking is no longer stressful for me. The recipes are quick and easy and more importantly delicious! With four little ones ages 4 and under I can’t spend a lot of time doing complicated meals.”

Lindsay shares, “The book gives lots of options for ‘Drive Thru Sue’ who is on the run and doesn’t have a lot of kitchen time. There are also many family-friendly recipes in the book.”

Are there lots of specialty ingredients required?

Question: I am interested in buying the book but am worried that there might be too many specialty ingredients. Do you think it is possible to still follow the guidelines in the book and stay on budget?”

Answer: The majority of the breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes in the book use normal ingredients found in pantries and grocery stores everywhere.  THM desserts do call for Stevia extract or a stevia blend so that will be your first, most important purchase.”

Dana shares:There are so many ways to make this work for your family. You don’t have to use all the unique ingredients. The concepts are more based on how you formulate your meals than having special ingredients.”

Elizabeth shares: “You can do it on plain cheap food but you can buy some special ingredients like glucomannan (which lasts so long) and a good Stevia extract and get so much more variety and powerful slimming snacks and meals. Even on a very small budget it can be done. There is a chapter about how to save money so you may find that interesting.”

Is Trim Healthy Mama healthy for pregnancy/nursing?

Question: The more I read on this site, the more anxious I am to have this book. Is it safe during pregnancy and nursing?

Answer: Trim Healthy Mama can meet the nutritional needs of both pregnant and nursing women and their babies. Each Mama can tweak the plan to suit her own needs and those of their growing baby. Serene, (the co-author of the book) completed two healthy pregnancies eating the Trim Healthy Mama way and nourished both babies with an abundant supply of milk.

Kaiya shares: “There are plenty of us nursing and doing THM. You may want to ease into the plan and do more crossovers and S-helpers so you don’t lose too quickly. I am eating whenever I’m hungry, just following the plan for switching food fuels. I have MORE energy eating this way and am enjoying the food.”

Larisa shares: “I am nursing a 7 month old. After a month of THM I’m down 12lbs and my milk supply has doubled! I went from size 14 to 10 though in jeans. I’m carrying a lot of pounds of breast milk! LOL.”

Brittany E shares: “We have a pregnant and nursing THM group that has a lot of these types of topics often.   Pregnant and nursing Mamas get more leniency with crossovers and S helpers to keep milk supply up. We had a mama post about 2 weeks ago about needing her milk to be richer for baby to gain weight. She got a lot of response from our lovely helpful mama’s. She posted today to update us, baby gained 12 oz. in 2 weeks and she lost 6 lbs.”

Is Trim Healthy Mama gluten-free friendly?

Question: “Is the book gluten free friendly? Our family is gluten free and we can’t/do not want gluten in our diets. ”

Answer: Most of the recipes in the book do not use ingredients with gluten. Sprouted or sour dough breads are on plan options for people who tolerate them well but Trim Healthy Mama is easily implemented completely gluten free.

Stephanie S. shares: “Yes, this is definitely doable for those who are gluten-free. My youngest son and I eat almost 100% gluten free and I have been beyond grateful to THM for giving me easy, whole food recipes that are gf and sooooo delicious!!”

Kelly D. shares: “THM is low glycemic, so a majority of the recipes are GF, but you won’t be using some of the starchier grains.  The recipes are very simple.  You’ll want to use gluten free oats.  Flax and almond flour are also used, and occasionally oat fiber.”

Is Trim Healthy Mama expensive?

Question: I am interested in buying the book but am worried that there might be too many specialty ingredients. Do you think it is possible to still follow the guidelines in the book and stay on budget?”

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

The majority of the breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes in the book use normal ingredients found in pantries and grocery stores everywhere.  Trim Healthy Mama desserts do call for stevia extract or a stevia blend so that will be your first, most important purchase. We have many Mamas who do the plan on very strict budgets, and the plan was written when the authors themselves were pinching pennies.  So it can be very budget friendly…many of the recipes are even WIC friendly.  Pearl & Serene do showcase some items from their pantry in the book, and introduce you to some fun & unique specialty ingredients, but the plan itself can be done with very basic ingredients. It can be as simple and basic or as decadent as you desire.

More Mamas Answer:

Dana shares, “There are so many ways to make this work for your family.

Can I do Trim Healthy Mama if I’m dairy or allergen-free?

Question:  How does Trim Healthy Mama fit with food allergies? I see some of the recipes pictures have cheese or dairy in them, my body won’t tolerate those foods.

Answer: Many of the Mamas in our community are successfully on plan with a variety of allergens in the mix. Almond milk and coconut products can replace many dairy options and goat or sheep’s cheese like (Kirkland Picorino) from Costco, make tasty dairy cheese alternatives.

Lidsay J. shares: “I homeschool four, one with dairy intolerance. I have to say this is very doable!”

Francine L. shares: “You absolutely can eat gluten and dairy free — but you need to get the book so that you understand the foundational theories. You’ll just have to rework some of your favorite recipes.”

Diana M shares: “I didn’t buy this book to lose weight. I was happy where I was at. But I had lots of restrictions. No Gluten or grains, no dairy, soy or tapioca. I didn’t enjoy eating. I still can’t eat any of those but I love all the yummy THM treats.  The Golden Pan Bread on page 270 has simplified my life! ”

Can I eat out if I’m on Trim Healthy Mama?

Question:  Can you cheat every once in a while? Sometimes we do have to eat dinner on the go. In the fall, my kids are each in multiple activities and life will become crazy. I guess I need someone to honestly say this is easy and you can do it.

Answer: Trim Healthy Mama has a no self-loathing policy. Almost everyone chooses to eat off plan foods now and then but the Trim Healthy Mama way is to forgive, forget and eat a delicious on plan meal as soon as you are able. A slimming Trim Healthy Mama meal is always only three hours away from a mishap. But eating out does not have to mean you’ll cheat. There are many delicious options to choose from at every restaurant that will allow you to stay on plan.

Mary S. shares: “You can eat out while doing this plan. My husband does all the time and still loses weight. There’s a chapter called The Real World. It’s short, but clearly explains how to make on plan choices at restaurants.”

Donna M. shares: “I totally failed Friday dinner, but just chalked it up to a cheat meal, and got back on plan the next day. This is the first time I’ve gone on an eating plan and not felt horribly guilty for making a mistake.”

Brenda B. shares: “Has anyone noticed that they have more will power? I went by a McDonalds to get something to drink on my way to a meeting. I normally wouldn’t be able to go there and not get at least some French fries! I did it! Just an unsweetened tea for me. No cravings at all! I know that sounds crazy, but in the past I have almost felt addicted to  fast food. I feel so different! I’ve only been on plan for one week!”

What If I’m too busy to make this work?

Question: Inot only homeschool my kids but also work a job outside of the home. My life is hectic and full. Will this be too complicated to learn with my limited time?

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

The authors designed this plan to be infused into the chaos and craziness we all call life. They know women are maxed out with the list of things they already have to do. Becoming a slave to the kitchen in order to achieve a healthy waistline and nourish a family is not possible for most of us. Trim Healthy Mama is applying nutritional common sense in a doable manner.

More Mamas Answer:

Bonnie shares: “Ladies, you CAN do this! You have to commit, yes, but it’s so worth it. I have a very very busy house, we have 11 children, 10 of which I’m still feeding, seven of them are ages 10 yr down to 8 months, I live 40 minutes from our nearest health food store. You have to be determined, but you CAN do this. If I can you can I promise. It’s so worth it. I’m down 38 lbs. It feels INCREDIBLE.”

Kiva L. shares, “I work outside the home as a college instructor. Can you say grading papers??? Busy…three kids in football, volleyball, and drama.  THM changes the way you think about food…I needed it and was ready. I decided I couldn’t afford not to!”

No Milk? No Honey?

Question: I’ve heard that milk and honey are out on this diet plan… how can you call it “Healthy” when you’re cutting out natural and healthy foods?

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

This is a misconception… the authors actually use honey and milk for their children and occasionally raw honey for themselves since they are both at goal weight, but milk and honey are not weight loss friendly foods on the plan. Cultured milk in the form of yogurt and kefir is on plan due to the reduction of sugars and honey can be used medicinally to fight infections. Artificial sweeteners are not encouraged on plan but there are some fabulous natural sweetening options so you can make  lots of on plan sweet treats.

More Mamas Answer:

Kari shares, “THM can be whatever you want it to be. I would imagine if you wanted to make it fadish, you could. If you’re traditional, that would work too. I have a WAP (Weston A Price) mindset, so I don’t do frankenfoods. There are others that do. It’s VERY flexible on whatever end of the spectrum you’re on.”

Gwen shares, “From a glycemic standpoint, honey is sugar…so those who want to lose weight will want to avoid it. From a processing standpoint, honey is a vastly superior form of sugar, that’s brimming with nutrients (unlike processed sugars). But it’s not a weight loss friendly option as a primary sweetener for THM.”

What if I or my family don't need to lose weight?

Question: Is Trim Healthy Mama worth looking into if I need to gain or maintain weight?

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

Trim Healthy Mama addresses how to maintain or even gain weight in a healthy, nourishing way that’s totally appropriate for kids, husbands, or mamas.  And it’s easy to apply the weight loss principles for some and the gain or maintenance principles for others, all in one meal.

More Mamas Answer:

Lydia F. shares, “I have four growing boys, and making sure they got enough to eat while I “dieted” worried me too. But Pearl & Serene make it easy to integrate your meals with your families…there’s a chapter for that!”

Andrea S shares, “I am the only one in our home using the principles to lose. I have three that wanted to and have gained weight in the last month. My husband weighed the exact same for about 20 years. In the last few years he put about 5 pounds on, but has longed to be able to gain weight.  Well, he is SUPER excited as in just 4 weeks he has gained 5 pounds!!!! I used the principles in the book to help them gain, even while using stevia!

Is Trim Healthy Mama a "religious book?"

Question: I noticed some of the before and after Trim Healthy Mama testimonies express thanks to God. Is Trim Healthy Mama religious in nature?

Trim Healthy Mama Answers:

Trim Healthy Mama welcomes people of all religions and even non religions. It is not affiliated with any one ministry or denomination but the authors make no apology that the book was written from a Christian perspective as that is their belief system. But any woman of any belief system or background is welcome to do the plan and to join the group. There is a no judgment policy toward others in the Trim Healthy Mama community.

More Mamas Answer:

Mandie shares, “I have my own personal beliefs as to what/who god is and I love this book. If you’re not into the “bible side” of the book, it is very easy to skim through it. The nutritional advice is wonderful and worth it.”

Veronica shares, “I love this book. I don’t care that these two wonderful women, that have given so much of themselves to us, are a different religion from me. I see this as a way to not be fat anymore.
